Epigenetic changes are fascinating. Consider this, a queen bee and worker bee have the exact same DNA. The only difference in development is the epigenetic changes brought about by a food in their diet, in this case royal jelly. Much like drugs of abuse, high fat diets and sugars like alcohol, royal jelly is an environmental exposure that one bee got and not the other. Though not part of the original DNA, these epigenetic marks produced a drastically different phenotype. Similar, albeit less drastically noticeable changes happen in the brains of addicts based off of their exposures and genetic predispositions. Luckily, some of these same changes that can eventually lock in addiction can be reversed. Some epigenetic marks are permanent or written in ink, while others are transient or erasable as if written in pencil.
